WHEN I MOVED TO WESTERN MASS., LAND OF MANY ARTISTS, AND RETIRED FROM SIGN PAINTING, I KEPT UP MY HARD WON SKILLS OF THE FLOPPY BRUSH AND OIL SIGN ENAMEL BY TRANSFERRING TO PAINTING FURNITURE. I FOUND FURNITURE EVERYWHERE- AT THE DUMP, ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, IN MY AUNT’S TOBACCO BARN FULL OF CHAIRS AND TABLES COLLECTED OVER DECADES, PART OF THE DETRITUS OF SOCIETY. MY REQUIREMENTS ARE NO VENEER, TO BE WELL BUILT AND SHAPELY AND NOT MADE OF SUCH BEAUTIFUL WOOD TO BE CRIMINAL TO PAINT IT. I USUALLY MAKE A PATTERN OF AN IDEA, TRANSFER IT TO THE PIECE I’M WORKING ON AND THEN THROW AWAY THE PATTERN. I LIKE THE EXPERIENCE OF COMING UP WITH SOMETHING NEW. I LIKE COMMISSIONS , IN ANY MEDIUM, IN THAT YOU WILL LIKELY GO IN A DIRECTION FROM LISTENING THAT YOU WOULDN’T OTHERWISE GO.
